  • BG upped my DD by £99 in Jan

We moved into a new build house 3 years ago and used BG for gas and leccy. On both accounts we were told they had problems setting up accounts for us. Apparantly there was a computer software glith that needed to be sorted. Eventually the gas was sorted and put in my partners name, we owed about £700 in back gas by the time they sorted it but by overpaing we have repaid and moved our gas elsewhere.

The same happened with the electricity but they didn't manage to sort it out until we owed nearly £1400.00. We DID ring and try to pay time and time again but they wouldn't accept it and told us it might end up not being allocated against our account. So we waited.

Eventually it was sorted and put in my name. The debt is now down to £1000 and we repay £86.00 every month. It was £85 but BG reviewd it and hassled and hassled for an increase, they settled for £1.00 more after nearly and hour.

This £86.00 has been paid every month for a year, no problems. However, without any notice BG this month charged us £185.00 on the 10th Jan. I know there probably isn't much I can do about that but how can I prevent them doing this in the future. Also how can I swap away from BG. Can I put it in my partners name, say she has moive in and thn swap away from BG to someone with a better rate. Obviously I will still continue to pay the debt off, I just want it more under my control.

Thanks for any help, the extra £100 has put us under real pressure this month and we may end up missing a payment or two as we havent got the cash now for other bills.

Stopping them doing it in the future is not a problem. Either change your DD to a Standing Order so you control how much goes out, or get a quarterly bill and then set up a separate arrangement for the arrears.

It's not exactly your fault that you owe this money, so they should be understanding.

If you had no warning of the change in the DD amount you should be able to reclaim it back under the DD Guarantee. I have had similar problems recently with BG messing around with my payments, have a look at my thread, sorry I can't do a link at the moment but it's "Oh dear BG" or something like that.

I doubt if you'll be able to transfer while there is a balance on the account.

Could I not tell them I had moved out, submit a final reading, my partner 'move in' and start off with someone else?

Meanwhile I can get the bills sent to a po box and pay arrears as usual. Would this work?

I'm pretty sure they'd want a physical address where they could contact you. I don't think they'd allow a PO Box.

They can't change your DD without your consent (& yes I know they did but they shoudn't) Reclaim it plus interest
