  • Limited Company Identity fraud , utility bill liability

Hi, I work from home designing websites and for this I work through a limited company. Recently I have received final demands from two utility companies for services that were taken out in the name of my limited company, but for services provided to addresses with which I have no connection. Somebody has clearly been using my company identity to open bogus accounts with these utility companies.

Can anyone advise what is the best course of action here and whether I could be held liable for these unpaid bills? I have explained the situation to both companies and the first appear to have dropped any further action. But the second has ignored my explanations and is pursuing me for £640. What can I do?

    Thanks.

write to the companies rejecting liability and explaining why. In particular dispute entering into these agreements and having any connection with the properties in question.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Thanks Atticus, I have already written to the companies concerned and have been sent a copy of the fraudulent bill, but oddly, it was not addressed to my limited company but to a letting agency. I have spoken to the letting agency who confirmed that during the dates specified on the bill an entity claiming to be my limited company was resident at the address on the bill. Fortunately before the start of of this residency I had already moved 400 miles away, so shall forward proof of this along with copies of other documents that show my limited company was trading in Cumbria and not in Bristol.
