Hi
New to website and I am looking for some guidance.
I rented out a property and the tenants vacated one month before the end of the tenancy.* We never let the property out anymore until just short of two years from the end of the tenancy.
The rent to us on the property was upto date however I find now that the council are coming after us as landlords because the property was left empty for the month when the tenants were responsible.
So the council are counting the month the tenants were responsible although they vacated and now we find we have to pay the two year empty property tax including that month.
Hope this makes sence and am I liable for empty property tax when the tenants should not have vacated and are responsible for the property.

Rent liability and council tax liability do not always go hand in hand.

Whether or not they remained liable for the month depends on whether or not they still held a tenancy granted with an interest of 6 months or more - it can be quite technical (council tax legislation gets complicated quite quickly once you dive below the surface).
