The "best buy" British Gas rate that uswitch are quoting will be the British Gas Click online tariff. If you are currently with BG on any other tariff, it probably IS worth switching to the online one and it is "best buy" in much of the country for most customers.

It's irrelevant to compare monthly payments, both because everyone's usage is different and because actual fuel cost and monthly payments are not the same, depending whether you are over- or under-paying and whether you were in credit or debit last time your payment level was worked out.

As long as you are entering actual annual consumption in kWh into the comparison engines, they ARE reliable. If you enter usage in terms of monthly payments, the comparison engines have to make assumptions about your usage and they'll often be misleading.

If you use Quidco (or similar) to switch suppliers, you will often get fairly significant cash rebates - maybe £50 or so - with some suppliers, so that's worth doing.

I personally believe that Martin Lewis & Co. are over-hyping the benefits of fixed/capped tariffs and I wouldn't fix. But if you can't afford a significant increase in fuel costs, the extra initial cost of fixing/capping may be worthwhile for you - much as with mortgages.
