Council stole my private parking space!

I live in a shared block of flats, we had off street parking areas outside just adjacent to the road. These are mentioned in the deeds and the plans. The council added these areas to a traffic order and we now have to pay them to park here. They claim they can do this on private roads. I don't think this is right, can anyone advise? Many thanks!

Unfortunately for you the council are correct.
It might be a private road (ie not maintained at public expense) but it is still a public highway.
The Road Traffic Regulation Acts authorises local authorities to permit on-street parking on public highways. With the permitting came control and then parking charges.’
