  • Computer help needed -my daughter is sooooo blonde!!!!

Need a bit of help here gang.

We bought Jess a laptop for Christmas. Set it up, all fine, she's been doing her coursework on it, password protected the log in on start up, though God only knows why, as it never left her side anyway! But, in her infinite 15 year old wisdom, she decided to change the passowrd, not set a reminder for the new passowrd, and yes, you've guessed it, she can't bloody well remember the new password.

Any suggestions? Its running Vista (or it would be if we could log in to it). Have tried booting in safe mode but no joy there, just goes straight to the log in screen. I think she's also tried F2 then changing the user passwords but that didn't work either, Resetting is not really an option cos of course all her schoolwork is on there and she hasn't backed it up to CD rom. And no, she didn't make a password reset disc before she changed the password.

    Help please............

Cheers, will do later, but he'll probably read this at some point anyway, and it will teach her a lesson to be without the lappy for a few days lol. Only thing is, she'll be monopolosing this one. Good job she's out at the moment...I can make my phone calls in peace, get on my computer, and I have control of the telly flicker, cos I'm all on my own. Lovely! catch up later or tomorrow.

Re: Computer help needed -my daughter is sooooo blonde!!!!

          Nice One..

When I got my first PC back in the days of Amstrad and IBM, I inadvertently password protected the system bios of my computer, to this day I do not know what it is, except it is a combination of arrow presses, and the machine resides in my parents loft.

Ok, Only one way I know of doing this with Vista, without reinstalling your system.

          Here Goes:

Petter Nordahl-Hagen has written a Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista offline password editor:

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

If its a bit technical for you let me know and I write an step by step to guide you through.

Re: Computer help needed -my daughter is sooooo blonde!!!!

Yep, back at work anyway. Hard at it, not really. Feel like crap and got a banging head, loads of stuff to sort out, not least finding a new yard for Jerry cos I'm well peed off at our yard and he's in the naughty corner again. Jumped out of his field last night (4 foot gate he cleared) and took himself up to his stable. Yard owner not impressed and told me I could take him away! If I hadn't been in such a good mood I'd have got my horsebox and taken him there and then, but would have ended up with him in my garage cos nowhere to take him lol. So now he's got to go in a filed with 2 mares he's never met, which meant that I couldn't turn him out today cos it was pitch dark, too dangerous to chuck him in with new horses in the dark so left him in, which he's quite happy about, with a mega haynet.

Enough of my rant, will expand in FMB later.

have you tried just pressing Esc(ape) when the password promt comes up? i know that used to work when i set a password on my old millenium edition OS, i set a password then immediately forgot what i'd chosen. pressing escape just let it boot up as normal, why i dont know lol

My son did much the same when he first got his lappy, he re-booted it pressing the f12 key and set a new account via systems administrator, he never did get back onto his firsts account.

                    Good luck,

Re: Computer help needed -my daughter is sooooo blonde!!!!

I have been having a lot of trouble with my computer for the past few weeks, since my two sons were home for Christmas and infected it with a whole load of viruses. I had some help from the gentleman PKea and I was still encountering problems, I then got a PM from Nicklow. He gave me a link to a site which offers protection against any invasive software for your computer. I downloaded it and ran the scan, well I ran it a few times and it kept finding the viruses but wasn't able to remove them. I then contacted the sites help and advice. They took remote control of my computer and distroyed all of the problems. It was very odd sitting here watching the cursor wizzing around the computer and making everything right. I would not have been able to do this myself. I recommend that if you are having problems with viruses on your computer you install AdwareAlert and let them sort it out for you. It cost less than £20 and the time the techguy spent fixing things was worth twice that and the payment is for a whole year.

                      http://adwarealert.com/support.htm

                      Thanks again PKea and Nicklow.

                      Best wishes,
                      Hod..Liam..

Well, burnt the cd, or so I thought....folowed thre instructions, got laptop into boot mode by pressing F12, told it to boot from cd, i think, but didn't get what i should have got according to the walkthrough on the site, got loads of stuff about copyright Caldera inc, various dates, then finishing up with DR-DOS A:\

So thats it, I'm obviously doing something wrong. Can I have an idiots guide please?

                        Thanks

Can you post some of the files that are on the cd, so I can see whether all the files were burnt correctly.

What did you use to burn the disk, it could be that you have just copied the actual disk image rather that burnt the image.
If you have done this its not a problem I can sort it for you

or you can download Zone alarm for firewall protection, AVG for virus protection, Registry Smart to clean up your registry and other problems and finally SpyBot search and destroy for all your malicious software needs.

......and best of all they work, work very well and are FREE..... YES FREE

I would recommend all the above exept Zone Alarm if using Vista, as far as I'm aware it's still not compatible with vista.... come on zone labs pull your finger out.
Also from Zone Labs you can download adware removal and many other software title for FREE. (again, not sure if they are compatible for vista)

Just thought I would pass this on :okay:

I don't think I've burnt the disc properly. Can you tell me exactly how to do it please. We've got Nero on the pc at home, can't do it a work, partly for reason mentioned in FMB fanclub, but also cos no programme for burning it on this computer at work. Will get online at home tonight.

                              Sorry to be a pest.....
