  • Virus alert !!!!

The other day my laptop was affected by a virus, I did all the usual, Spybot, cCleaner, AVG etc but nothing worked.

This shows up as something called 'Personal Security' and the guy that worked for us till Tuesday clicked on it and it infected the lappy, so bad that I've had to get an IT friend of ours to take it away and completely overhaul it.

I've had a text just now to say that the lappy had 3 serious viruses and one was in the recyle bin. Apparently its an embedded file and hidden (whatever that means).

Just thought I'd post this up as a warning guys.

    Re: Virus alert !!!!

    Hiya Sapphy

I opted for Capital One to be able to access my statements on line so now they do not send me my monthly statement.

I went on line to try and download the statement and it started asking weird question like my DOB, my Social security number etc.... I was nerveous so I came out of it and immediately phoned Capital One who said I must have been on a rogue site. (The lady I was speaking to was in the Philapines) she told me to try again and she gave me the web address which I did. It came up with a security alert and it would not allow me access. She said this has never happened before and said I should try again, which reluctantly I did and got the same thing and could not progress to get my online statement.

As a consequence of this I have told capital One that I want to go back to monthly paper statements as I did not like the idea that i could be on a rogue site and as a warning to other users of Capital One on line, please be aware that you could be on a rogue site.

    Rant over....

Well I've finally got the lappy back, apparently the guy that worked for us and was using lappy, had been searching dodgy sites ie: male rape, transvestite pole dancers (must be one of Beryl's friends) and others that I cannot name on here for fear of breaking the decency rules.
Anyways the lappy had a grand total of 4 Trojans, 3 viruses and loads of malware and spyware. Allegedly the lappy is now clean of all of them except for the 'Personal Security' one, that has been 'locked away' until AVG or someone come up with something to remove it.
Thank god for a friend with a degree in IT eh !

PMSL Mike, if we hadn't 'let go' the guy that caused this, I would be sacking him come Monday for this misdemeanour. I thought he was quiet and now I know the reasons why ffs.

How can you be sure that he actually searched for these subjects?

All PCs have porn on them regardless of whether you have searched for it.

                      Re: Virus alert !!!!

                      hi

is this the personal security virus that appears down by your clock and causes pop ups asking you to download some virus checking or fix. if it is then there is a chance it has its self been directiong your computer to various dubiuos sites. it is also possible that even if it appears gone it is very stealth aware and may be lurking waiting days weeks or months before returning.

if it does return i would recomend software such as bullguard (if you can obtain the oem version its approximately £20 and can be legally loaded onto 3 computers). if it doesnt have a fix for your virus they have a forum which will guide you thro the manual removal of the more nasty viruses.

The same thing happened to my mum last week, but with her Nationwide account. She just went on to check her transactions - went directly to the site, not via any links in an email or anything - and it was asking for her full password [rather than just the usual random numbers/letters], DOB, postcode and full name. Not being very internet savvy, she entered the details because it wouldn't let her go further without doing so, and it wouldn't let her close the page.

The following day she received a call from Nationwide fraud team because of an unusual transaction - her credit card account had been ripped off to the tune of £1500! I've now given her a crash course in internet security and told her to just turn the thing off at the button if she can't get out of a site!!!
