  • CD Rom drive doesn't like CD's: suggestions to fix it?

As the title suggests my CD Rom drive does not want to do the one thing I would like it to do, ie play CD Roms.

Any suggestions to fix it? I have an educational CD that might help my employment prospects.

Locate the cdrom.inf file and "right" click on it, chose install and reboot.
    If you have SP2 installed the latest version will be in;
    C:\WINDOWS\Servicepackfiles\i386

if that don't work try deleting upper and lower filters for the device.
You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP
Borrow money from a pessimist -- they don't expect it back.

What is SP2? Remember you are talking to a complete dimwit, ie me.

Right-Click "My Computer", and select "Properties".

At the top right of the little dialog box that comes up it should say "Windows XP Professional SP2" or "SP3" - or it might say "Windows XP Home SP2" or "SP3".

If it doesn't say "SP2" or "SP3", go to Windows Update IMMEDIATELY and sort it out. It's free and it's massively important.

Open internet explorer, click on the 'tools' command and then click on widnows updates.

Then follow the instrucions and wait whiel version is upgraded. I have no idea how long it will take to update all the upgdates and revisison but it might be a while so make sure you have a cuppa and something else to do.:tung:

Get your bloody machine updated NOW, Nattie.
There's way to many nasties doing the rounds to be online in an unpatched state.
You'll need to run through the process a few times to make sure your completely up to date.

Get ALL the available updates and we'll see you in a few days

Oh yeah and as for you CD drive, BIN IT and get a DVD writer.
They are dirt cheap and dead easy to install..

Ps is this your Vista machine or XP ??

If it's Vista it still needs updating, but wont take as long.
SP 2 and 3 are for XP ONLY.

Dont know if it helps you but Windows are offering Win7 on beta trial (if you fancy a new O/S), I have it on a dual boot and it works pretty damn good think you can still get a product key from Windows 7 Beta Customer Preview
and I believe downloads of th install are available from 'other sources'.
