  • Virus Alert ????

    Hi

I received this from my friend earlier is there any truth in it at all ?

BIG VIRUS COMING !!! PLEASE READ & FORWARD !!!

    http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/postcard.asp

Hi All, I checked with Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!

I checked Snopes (URL above, and it is for real!!

Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your contacts It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept.

COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT TO THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

Snopes lists all the names it could come in.

Well what do you expect from someone (me) who has had BT Business Hub for over 2/3 yearsor even more and only yesterday found out that it is also wireless as well. Just think of all the lonely evenings I have sat in this office in front of the PC with only the radio for company when in fact I could have been on the sofa in the lounge with the lappy.

So you 'expect' moi to understand computers and things ?

              Re: Virus Alert ????

You are not the first to be taken in by these things and neither will you be the last. In fact, these hoaxes rely on the general frenzy that is fulled by the media distrust of the internet.

The fact of the matter, is that most of the 'internet' scares that appear are complete b******s and then backed by some so-called expert (usually purporting to be a specialist in this area but in truth just a PR person from that company looking for publicity and work for the firm concerned) that media (inclusive of TV) will roll out to back up the scaremongering.

As with anything, the internet can also provide the answer so if you are at all suspicious of such hoaxes then simply google it. The trusted places to go for info on these are actually the known AV vendors. It is no in their interest to lie to you (unlike many of the smaller firms trying to sell you more general security services).

It's my profession, so I smell a rat pretty quickly and have a good giggle at the PR men that the press reel out to comment on them under the guise of being an 'expert' !!
