  • UK Internet Register

A friend of ours runs a small childrens charity. about two years ago she received an invoice from a firm called "UK Internet register". Supposedly she had a contract with them for advertising her Charity in their directory.

the invoice was for a staggering £639. She is certain that she would never have signed a contract for that. It's a small charity, and they would never squander money like that.

A couple of days ago she received another invoice asking for two years payment of £1,278.

I've just dug around on the web and found that they have been fined heavily in Spain and Belgium. Their registered Office is sited in Hamburg.

How they catch you is by sending a fax to the recipient which appears at a casual glance to be a free listing in the register. However the small print commits you to a three year listing, automatically renewable after year three.

Anyone know if the UNTCCR can be applied in the EU? Anyone know if Germany has anything similar?

We're not too worried though, as although they have threatened court action to numerous individuals, I haven't heard of them doing more than threaten litigation

Just thought I might have a bit of fun with them.

PS The register site is absolute pants, and looking them up on Whois and reading their Alexa data, shows that they have negligeable traffic.

We got caught out with something similar around 5 years ago, although as i remember, the company in question claimed to be a charity (they tried the guilt trip to try and persuade us to pay up).

As i recall, a strongly worded letter was enough to fend them off.

If they did pursue the payment, i believe we would have simply ignored them lol

Rather than get embroiled in litigation, I think the best thing to do is pass any letters you do receive to your local Trading Standards office.

Yes Cet. I've contacted them today. I have a list of trading standards type bodies in other european countries and I shall copy letters to them. There is also an MEP who is interested in this bunch
