  • Selling 'Collection Only' items DO NOT accept PayPal

Prob you are aware but -I have seen so many caught out, (most recently a friend of a friend who lost a very expensive camera this way-!) that I wanted to spread the word..and at any given moment in time this scam seems to be happening to someone someplace.

If you are selling (particularly) high value goods especially cameras, phones etc. and it is for collection only
Then please for the love of God, state in your lisitng 'This item is for CASH on collection only. If the buyer sends pp funds then immediately return them with a message, 'this item, being for collection is cash only as described in the auction listing'

Goods that are collected, and especially high value electronics are continually being targetted by pp hi-jackers, who after winning the auction, will transfer the money into your pp account, collect it from you and shortly afterwards there will be the inevitable chargeback where pp will simply swipe the money back from you via your pp account or bank account.
Thus you will have lost goods and money.

Personally I dont trust e bay for selling high value goods in any case but with 'collection' items you have no way to prove the item was collected (getting the buyer to scrawl their signature I suspect will do no good)
(For the above scenarios it is always handy to have a cash tester pen.)

PP are aware of this type of theft yet they take no action.so it is up to you to protect yourself.
One occassion, the same hi jacked pp account was being used consecutively to buy iphones, day after day after day and pp were sitting around just letting new victims happen-with full knowledge (we were discussing and observing it happen in an e bay forum-stunned, though we did message the most recent victim/seller actually e bay would regard THAT as a violation of their terms-namely 'inteference with auction'!)

Ebay need investigating as well as a good hard kick up the backside. If PP have been notified and warned that a particular account is being used to commit fraud and do nothing to close the account and allow it to continue, then they could be seen to be complicit in any fraud using that account thereafter. Trying to fob victims off is not a good way to do business and it could result in PP being held liable.
Life is a journey on which we all travel, sometimes together, but never alone.

I stopped using PayPal for my Company after losing money due to fraudulent buyer protection claims stating goods not received or not as described, the latter being the most common and hardest to defend against (basically 100% likely to have PayPal decide in buyers favour). Though we did manage to get PayPal to change their terms so now if a customer raised a complaint with the receiver of the funds directly or by a 3rd party (except PayPal) then the buyer would not be entitled to buyer protection with PayPal. The new Terms will come into effect in April i believe and the relevant section is section 13.12, i think, of PayPals usage policy.

Full details can be found here - https://cms.paypal.com/uk/cgi-bin/?&..._policies_full

Though despite the changes we are not going to be using PayPal again till they compensate us for basically aiding and abetting a customer in breaching the contract of sale with us.
