Hello and Good Morning, I am a new member writing a message for the first time.
I supplied my Domain names to a web developer, paid £.500.00 deposit, agreement included web hosting and SEO services,
it is 14 months now, with a lot of problems and repeated feedbacks for mistakes, received Link of the website, still not
fully complete, now the Developer refuses to work on it any further, not host or take care of SEO, tried another Developers
to take over the website, fully complete and host this with SEO services, nobody is interested although I contacted over 20
website developers in UK reason is that the website is very dated, structurally scattered, weak structure / coding and not
easy to mend/complete and host, it is according to others, too much loosely spread and not at all SEO friedly. I have lost
£.500.00 now BUT the Developer is not answering because I want all my six domains (same name .com.net etc.) back in my
123reg.co.uk account. These are mine and I bought them a while ago, allowed Developesr to transfer in their account, can
anybody advise pleaese because I need them back to find another reliable source, 14 months and £.500.00 wasted.

Hello Ashbash. Sorry I can't help -that's a fairly specialised field. I hope there might be someone here who does know and can help you - there usually is!

Have you checked the domain records? You should still be the owner, though he may now be the registrar. You should be able to move the registrar name back to 123. or whoever.

Any .co.uk domain name can be moved by contacting Nominet. They have procedures for moving domains where you are the owner.

The registrar is the company used to register a domain, the registrant is the domain owner. 123reg is one of the domain registrars I use, so I'm familiar with them. The domains are owned by whoever appears as the registrant, regardless of who works on the site or where they are hosted. There is no reason to transfer domain OWNERSHIP to a web developer, all a developer would need is access to the control panel and FTP on the server where the domains are hosted to work on the site. The questions here would be:
        1) Did you actually allow the developer to register the domains under their name? If so, why?
        2) Are they still registered with 123reg, if not, where?
        3) Have you got access to the domain control panel of the registrar?

Regardless of whether the developer wants to work on the site or host it, you should retain control of your own domains. This matter is totally separate from the standard of work done by the developer, there are no hard and fast rules as to what a website should be like or what you should get for £500. It all depends on what you agreed with the developer and what type of site you were looking for. 'SEO' is a much touted term and its precise meaning is not always clear, everyone likes to say their sites are 'SEO-friendly', that doesn't mean yours will be at the top of Google, it's all to do with keywords and how they are used, links from other sites to yours, etc.

If the domains are not in your name or you haven't got access to the registrar's control panel you should contact the developer and ask them to rectify this situation. Depending on the registrars involved, there may be a cost for transferring them to another registrar and/or for changing the registrant's details.
