fees for damages

I have handed my hp car back and the have done a survey for 'wear and tear' and have given me a report stated I owe £838 for repairs for things like a tiny bump on the rear wheel hub,scratch on the door, scratch on 1 alloys etc etc......Also for not having a compressor in the boot (which I never had originally from vw when I first had the car 3 years ago) I didn't sign to say I agreed and they have given me 48 hours to respond/contact them to dispute it.
Where do I stand with this? Obviously I have handed the car back after paying 3 years of hire on it but don't have the money to pay the final amount to buy. I am also the 3rd owner...............

Did you pay more than 50% of the total amount?

Your liability is limited to 50% of the total amount and so cannot charger you any more than that. Unless the car was not I. Reasonable condition - fair wear and tear and the age of the car.

In any event you could also argue that payments above and beyond the 50% mark will cover costs of any alleged amount owed. I find it difficult for them to charge for a compressor unless they did an inventory of the car at the time confirming that it came with it.

We paid well over half as the outstanding finance to purchase the car was 6700 (with purchase fees) and we have paid 7848 to date........
The car is truly in good condition with a few scratches which are inevitable around lanes etc but I have taken photos of the 3 sml scratches concerned.

I have asked them for a full inventory from when the car was purchased, I also had to spend £200 on a parcel shelf which wasn't with the car originally and have told me they will charge me for its not returned with the car!
I would never recommend VW to anyone :-(
