  • Car insurance auto renewal - please help

Hi, I realised that my car insurance DD had increased significantly and cancelled it from the bank side. Sent an e-mail to the company cancelling the insurance. They are requesting some details and charging a fee which I am going to dispute. What worried me is that on their e-mail they stated: We will inform the Government Motor Insurance Database that your policy is cancelled. Your car must have continuous insurance in force or be declared off road to avoid a fine or prosecution.
Would this affect my future quotes if they say they have cancelled my insurance? Thank you

they are saying you cancelled the insurance, thereby the motor data base will show the event, also they are just pointing out to you that you need a SORN to DVLA if the car is off the road and not in use, get new insurance now as cancelling one makes no difference if you are using the car. the fee well always make sure that any agreement with an insurance company is not continuous, this is an add on which is wrong in my eyes.=, and if you insure elsewhere you can argue any so called cost (fee) I would tell them to go away.

Basically in agreement with Mike, but not sure about the fee.
      1) are you insured directly with an insurance company or through an intermediary?
      2) were you warned in advance that renewal was due?
      3) were you advised of increased premium?
      4) did you cancel before or after renewal date?

Thank you for the replies. They are saying that they can cancel from 4.04.14 if I reply to their e-mail and send some personal details.
Des8, I am feeling that the fee is very excessive and will try to dispute it.
        1) yes, directly
        2) they are saying so, but the renewal e-mails obviously got to the junk mail folder so i never seen them
        3) they are saying so, but I only noticed this after they took DD from my bank account
        4) after renewal date and this makes me worry that they are going to pull one of their dirty tricks on me let alone charging me the exit admin fee of £60.00 I
I am going to ask them what this fee is covering

If they did advise you in advance, but your spam filter dumped them, it's a warning to check your junk folder prior to emptying it. I doubt there's much you can do about that now, and IMO that's not their problem.
Regarding their charge for cancellation, that should be made clear in the policy wording. The amounts do vary between companies, some having a small charge plus a short term premium rate, others just charging a flat amount.
If it is set out in T&C's I doubt they will alter it for you, but if you don't ask you won't get.
If you decline to pay it, be aware that they will not release your proof of No Claims Discount (if you have one) until you do.

I decided to call them and spoke to accounts department. Initially they were just fobbing me off. I had to escalate the dispute to a formal complaint. Eventually they waved the admin fee. Result!

Which company was it, would be useful for others in the same situation.

like Green Flag yesterday = sent breakdown renewal to me = £20+ more than last year (includes a discount for no claims)
so I rang and queried and do a change of vehicle, the operator stated that as I want to change the vehicle to be covered a new price can be given, guess what back to last years cover cost (with discount), when mentioned why the high renewal cost was informed an amedment during the year as change of vehicle, (what rubbish a new Direct debit was sent to me to sign and send back) and the new price paid monthly, but I did say that to cover me in any vehicle would cost £100+, I stated the AA state £99 they said they could probably undercut that. I ignored and just renewed at the new price (same as last year) , so it seems you query a so called price and they are hoping to get away with a silent increase and no argument? The state of this country from top to bottom)

Thank you, I was very chuffed as could not afford to lose £60 for nothing. Just a reminder to all: fight, never give in, don't believe their bull about"you agreed to our T&C", question T&C, raise a complaint, follow to FO & FSA if needed.
