  • My uncle reregistered my car in his name without my consent!

Hi there, hoping someone can help me.
I live in Australia, and had a car stored in a shed on my nan's farm on a SORN. My uncle contacted me a few years ago asking if he could buy it to restore. He then said it was beyond repair, and only good for scrap. He said he needed the space in the shed, and that I needed to scrap it. He offered to arrange this and my dad gave him the log book, as he'd need it to take it to the scrap yard. As far as I knew the car was gone. I have just found out that he didn't scrap it, restored it, and has changed the ownership into his name. It's now his daily drive. When I asked for it back, he said I could have it if I paid him for the work he did on it - without my permission! I would've thought I'd have to sign something for him to change ownership - surely having possession of the log book is not enough to prove ownership of the car?!
Is there anything I can do? I won't get anywhere talking to him, this is a man who steals from my elderly nan! He has no morals!

Are the car and your uncle in the UK?

On the face of it, your uncle has committed the offence of Fraud by False Misrepresentation and, possibly, Theft, also. As for his audacity in asking for payment for the work he did without your knowledge and consent, it's your call, but you can either negotiate with him or give him the opportunity to hand over the keys on pain of you letting the police know of his actions and DVLA know of him tendering false information to them.

Thank you! I will try to get a resolution without taking it further, but in light of his behaviour in regards to my nan, I don't think I'll have any luck. It's good to know I have other options

Terrible as it may sound, but you may have to involve the police in this matter, even if it is only to protect your nan from further losses.

Isn't it a pity that he can no longer be sentenced to transportation to the colonies?
