          Hi Bill,

Just seen your comment in the chatbox.

The piece of legislation that comes to mind is the Unsolicited Goods & Services Act 1971. If the garage has carried out work they were not authorised to carry out, they are not entitled to payment for materials or labour for the work. And they can't remove the parts from the car. They forfeit any right to payment or recovery of the parts used. I would, however, check with your local Trading Standards Department before returning to the garage and before contacting Vauxhall's headquarters. It's a case of forewarned is forearmed.

TSOs are familiar with this sort of thing and often stage sting operations to catch garages at this. Nationwide Service Centres (formerly Apple Service Centres) were exposed on BBC TV carrying out unnecessary work or work not authorised by customers. That lead to sackings and the company having to refund £1,000s to customers who had been ripped-off.

Depending on what the TSOs say, it may be a case of paying to break the dealer's lien, but making it clear they will be taken to the Small Claims Court for recovery of charges for unauthorised work, along with costs. Sometimes, this can spook garages and make them back down, but not always.

If you have to pursue the dealer through the Small Claims Court and are awarded judgement, ask the Bailiff Manager what would be the chances of them and the court bailiffs wheelclamping th garage's parts delivery vans and any recovery vehicles they use, should enforcement become necessary, until they pay up.

          Give it some thought.

Excellent - BK and BB, a formidable duo!

Apologies Bill, I've only read this after it coming to the top of the pops again today. Delighted with the result. I would STILL like to know why the bumper off though.

Perhaps, like many mechanics, he has a "bumpers" fetish?|

Sussed it, actually quite obvious when you think about it.

That particular part was removed in preparation for the "bumper" bill the customer was about to receive.
