I was pulled over recently by the police while driving my brothers car for a random check. I have been driving for 12 years and as a fully comp driver I have always been insured third party to drive other cars. I have changed insurers recently and didnt bother to check all the small print (silly I know) but on the policy I am not insured third party on other cars. I am now facing 6 points on my licence and a possible ban as I already have 6 points. Is there any way I can plead ignorance or any possible way of reducing the points on my licence. I know its a long shot but I dont know what I would de without my licence.

Re: Fully comp insurance thought I was insured to drive other cars
i got pulled for no seatbelt this time last year.
they ran it through a check and it came back as uninsured.
i argued i was insured, although i was maybe late paying, i had nothing to tell me i wasnt insured.
Due to the time of night they let me drive home, with a warning if it turned out i was uninsured i would receive the automatic 6points and £200 fine.
In the morning i phoned my insurance who said i should have received a letter cancelling my insurance as i was late paying, and my insurance had been cancelled. I received the letter about 2 hours after the phone call.
I asked them to reinstate my insurance immediately, but the would not take my payment, and said i had to take a new policy from that time on, this would show i was not insured at the time of the stop.
i phoned the officer to explain, he said ignorance is not an excuse and to expect the fine.
i got fined £200 and 6 points
incidentaly, they let me off with the seatbelt issue.

More and more fully comprehensive policies are now not allowing you to drive any other motor car with the owneers permission (I think the wording is something like that!)
Sadly I don't think there's much you can do short of producing documents from the past x years where it stated you could drive other cars on a third party basis, say you thought this would be the same, admit you should have checked and throw yourself at the mercy of the court.

You'd walk a lot more and pollute the UK a lot less.
