  • Fine for selling a car

I have been landed a fine by the DVLC because the post office, or DVLC lost my V5 that i sent in.
I have looked on another V5 and it states that you have to ring in within 4 weeks if you do not get an acknowledgement letter agreeing that you have sent in your V5.
Question. Does anybody have the right to levy a fine without informing you that your inaction will cause this fine?

When it is the government involved, then they seem to be able to do what the hell they like TBH. The DVLA is a government body and as such I don't think you would have much luck in challenging this. However, my bro-in-law works at the DVLA and I will ask him if he knows what the score is with this next time I speak to him.

      The wording states:

      • The Registered Keeper will continue to be liable for the vehicle until DVLA is informed of the keeper change. (For further details please see note overleaf)

      • DVLA will issue an acknowledgement letter after 4 weeks to confirm you are no longer the Registered Keeper. If the acknowledgement letter is not received please contact DVLA 0870 240 0010.

How long has it been since you sold the vehicle and what exactly is the fine for, I assume it isn't only for not sending the V5, it will be because the new keeper has not taxed the vehicle or has acted incorrectly in some way.
