  • 15.hdi cam chain failure

    Hello.

please can I have some help.
I have a peugeot partner 1.5hdi blue tec van 22 plate. In December 25 the cam chain failed which damaged the engine so much that it needed replacing. It was 2 months over its 3 year warranty.

On the day of brakedown I called the dealer so I could arrange to take it to them. They could only book it in for February 26, nearly 3 months later, and I could only drop it off with them on the day of the booking. Very unhelpful.

it is a delivery van for my very small business and so I couldn't really wait that long. So it was taken to an independent garage who fixed in just over a week.
The AA and the independent garage all told me that the cam chain is always failing on these engines and there should be a recall. Dealer says there is no recall which dvla confirms.

After various bits of advice from dealer, cab, Ombudsman and dvla it has become apparent no one can help .

I have just tried using the sales and goods act on the dealer, suggesting that the engine was not fit for purpose and should have lasted longer than it did. The van was fully serviced. I am try to claim £4950 for the cost of a new engine and fitting.

dealer doesnt think they have a case to answer and suggested Ombudsman. But because the vehicle is for business purposes, they cant help.
they could help if I had had a recall letter because the recall comes with an extended warrenty.

is it worth me trying small claims court? Or should I just wait for a recall letter and then claim the cost back.

    Thank you

The following are my thoughts. Other forum users may have a different view.
Last year Stellantis offered a special extended warranty, 10 years or 150k miles for vehicles fitted with the 1 5 blue hdi diesel engine. This means your van should benefit from the extended warranty.
Stellantis also stated affected vehicle owners that had carried out repair work associated with cam chain failure could claim retrospectively for expenses provided the vehicle had been maintained and serviced correctly. The cut off date for this claim was 30th June 2025, meaning that unfortunately the repair work for your van was past the latest date
Your dealer didn't refuse to do the repair work, though they would have likely tried hard to find a reason why you should pay for the work
You were not happy with the earliest date you could book your van in. At that point you should have argued such a long delay was inconvenient and asked them to pay for another garage to carry out the work.
To have any chance of success in court you would need an automotive engineers report and opinion that the engine defect was present at the time you purchased the van.

Kpvan I don't know if you have seen my case in this forum which is fairly similar. I am going to court.

It has taken me a long time but I have finally got an email from Stellantis confirming that my van (Vauxhall Combo with the same engine as your Peugeot) is covered by the recall but a "glitch" meant it wasn't showing. They have now corrected that for me and the recall is now showing. You might want to double check the recall database now to see if your status has changed.

What got me there in the end was asking the question of DVSA as to why my vehicle with that engine, with the 7mm camshaft chain hadn't been recalled when everything published should have been. They queried it with Vauxhall/Stellantis who then admitted the "glitch".

I attach the DVSA information on the recall (with contact details shown).

This engine is clearly faulty and the van not up to scratch. I hope you get the justice you deserve.
