  • Car Insurance

Hi everyone, I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this but I’ll post it anyway.

So I’m 18 and I’m insured on a Mini Cooper as the main car on my policy. I have recently purchased a BMW that I drive around also. The BMW is currently covered by temporary insurance via the same company. I recently bought a new reg for the BMW and phoned my insurance up to tell them I will be switching the number plate. They told me that they cannot switch the plate on their database but they will leave a note on my insurance to say that I am insured to drive my BMW with this new number plate on. When I asked them what to do in the event of me getting pulled over, they told me to phone them and they will explain that I am insured. So my question is this: if I am pulled over which is very likely as my plate shows me as not insured, and my insurance company hasn’t left a note to say I’m insured, do I have grounds to take legal action? Verbally they have told me that insured.

    thanks in advance

Have you asked the insurer to confirm that in writing?

Have you notified the DVLA that you are assigning a new reg nr using form V750 certificate of entitlement?
Your insurance company isn't going to just take your word that you have purchased a private plate for the car. They will want to check with the DVLA

Yes I notified DVLA and have the right to use the plate.

I asked my insurance company to send me anything to confirm that I am insured but they said they cannot do that, all they can do is ‘leave a note’ on the insurance. I cannot see this note anyway on my insurance app.

In which case you should write to the insurance company stating the date you assigned the new reg nr and request a written reply confirming your policy details have been amended.

If the company isn't bothered to reply in writing it doesn't bode well in the event you have to make a claim and you should consider changing to another company

In that case their database is unfit for purpose.
I would write a letter of complaint, confirming the conversation and telling them you think that is unsatisfactory.
Ask them to issue a certificate of insurance shewing the new number plate.

who are these insurers? I want to avoid them

This suggests that although you have the entitlement to change the registration number of your BMW to the new number you haven't done so yet and it is still carrying the original number plates. Is that the position? If so that would explain why they won't issue a new Certificate of Insurance as that must state the registration number that is actually on the vehicle.

If you put the new number into the DVLA vehicle checker what does it show? If you enter the old number what does it show?

Enter the registration number of the vehicle - Check if a vehicle is taxed and has an MOT - GOV.UK

Hmm.. original post a tad ambiguous as also states: "if I am pulled over which is very likely as my plate shows me as not insured,"
