Surrendering a Vehicle

I have had to surrender my vehicle to the dealerships finance company. I have emailed the finance company and have left the car ( not working) at the dealership. The dealership wants to charge me storage . Having informed the finance company I will no longer make payments, when is it deemed that the car is not mine? When the VO5 is signed or from surrender email? Thank you .
