Thank you Rob, he was due at 9 but called to say that whilst travelling down the motorway a stone his his windscreen on the truck and he has to get the windscreen replaced so he is coming at 9am tomorrow morning.

This is exactly what he said to me yesterday:

I have your current liability at zero, arrears are zero, collection charge is zero so you have nothing to pay, it's a 61plate so we're not expecting it to be in showroom condition, unless I arrive and its got a wheel missing, no chairs or no dashboard then your liability will stay at zero.
He will do the appraisal and I have to be there because I will be seeing what he is writing at every step of the way, he wi be taking photographs and videos of the car ( I have already done this, I've taken 100+ photos!

He said I will need to be here because once he has finished the appraisal I have to sign his hand held device that he has completed the appraisal on to say that I give up my right to the car, when I said that I understood there was no legal requirement, he said you're right, there isn't but I can't take the car without you authorising it, we'd have to go to court to get a possession order to be able to take the car without you agreeing to it.

I did say but I'm not stopping you from taking it, I want you to! He said that's what I'm signing for, to say that they can!

I will give an update tomorrow morning once he has been!

That electronic device may or may not have something on there that says you agree with the appraisal so you probably want to be a bit cautious. If the concern is that he needs evidence of collection then (if you are able to) you could print yourself a one page receipt form which says that the agent has confirmed collection of the car and both of you can sign that instead. He shouldn't object to that if all he needs is evidence of authorisation.

I have a template lying around somewhere if you need it.

Thank you very much Rob, if you have a template, that would be grear, I can print it out and ask that we both sign that instead.

I am hesitant with the signing of the device as I have seen other posts on here where people have been stung by signing it.

Thank you all. For your answers to my questions, the VT is now complete, I have got a charge fir £170 for a scratch where someone had keyed the car and I hadn't noticed, it is a light scratch but it is there and so I cannot dispute it. So all done, thank you

So did u sign their handheld device or did u print off the form for them to sign
