  • VT while car has a fault?

My wife has a car on hire purchase. There is a fault with the air suspension system. We were going to sell it as it is worth roughly what she owes the finance company however now this issue has arisen and the repair bill is circa £2000. Can I just VT it with that fault still there or do I need to get it sorted either way?

She is a little over one payment away from VT point.

    Thanks in advance.

You cannot sell the car, you dont own it and dont have legal title to sell the car while on HP. You would need the HP companies approval to sell.

In theory you can VT , if the repairs are not such that they were due to you failing to look after the car properly then it shouldnt be a problem although id check your contract first just to see what it says about maintaining the car

Sorry, I should have clarified... When I say sell, I meant I would settle the finance first and then sell it privately. That was my intention as I have a car on order for her.

I'll check the contract however we have only had the car a little over a year and it has been serviced and had a recent MOT. We have only done about 5000 miles in it since purchase. The fault seems to be linked to the compressor which controls the air suspension and I am told that this is fairly common on cars of this age - it usually happens much earlier than this but the mileage on ours is very low.
