  • Not paid for hours worked

My daughter has been working for a company since 27 th June as a community carer. She will get her first months pay on 26th July, but on receiving her pay slip today has only been paid up to the 16th of the month and only for 17 hours worked and 17 miles @.35p per mile. During this period she has actually worked for 60 hours and done a lot more miles. She has spoken to the payroll dept. Who have said they will look into it and sort it next month. Unfortunately £131.97 is not going to be enough for her to pay her bills and put petrol in her car for work ( last month petrol and parking for work cost her almost £200). She is only 18 and is stressing herself out as she can't afford to go to work this weekend and next week. Help!

Re: Not paid for hours worked

    Morning,

If your daughter has been underpaid then she needs to put pressure on her employer to recalculate and pay the money ASAP. The money can be paid within 24 hours but the business will be charged for it and unfortunately if they are in the wrong its their fault not your daughters.

It is unreasonable to expect someone to be paid just over £100 which is a fraction of what she ought to have been paid and still expect her to go to work.

They will be in breach of contract more than likely for failing to pay the correct amount, and your daughter should explain that she needs the money and they should have paid her the correct amount - they can't expect her to live off that amount for the month!

If it were me I'd be harassing them to looking into it Monday and get back to her the same day with any adjustments being paid no later than Tuesday.

If they insist it will be paid next month then she will need to consider her options from there.

Thank you for your reply. They are now saying that it is the way they pay, that she will get paid for July at the end of August, August at the end of Sept etc. Surely this is wrong, especially when you have to use your own fuel and claim back your mileage.

        What does her contract say?

Just re reading your thread, it sounds like they are saying that payment is a month in arrears and possibly only paid for the days worked in June?

If we know what the wording says about payment then we can understand whether she is owed money or not.

I understood the gist of it to be paid a month in arrears too, Rob.

It may be possible to get a 'tide-over' payment from the employer, repayable in installments.
