  • Bought used car - no V5C but given a colour (photocopy?) of one page?

I fear I have been duped so am looking for advice. I saw a car on eBay last Friday and purchased it, the seller (a company) drove it down at no extra cost yesterday. Seller rushed me through the sale finalisation as he had booked a taxi to get him to the nearest train station (I'm in the south west, he came from East London) so we had about 15 minutes to finalise the sale. MOT paper looked OK and I had been online before buying to check the full MOT history on the Gov.UK website, but on closer examination the new MOT certificate loosk like a photocopy. He also gave me what now appears to be a colour photocopy of one page of a V5C but not the actual document. Told me I can register the car myself online now as rules have changed. Couldn't leave fast enough after I paid him (bank transfer, he was very anxious I did this immediately he arrived). Have now discovered I cannot tax the car without V5C notification to DVLA (tear off piece of full document) so I have a car on my drive that I can't legally drive and am out of pocket by £3k. I signed a receipt but it was not carbon copied so he has no copy himself. However he does have my money which I had to send to a personal bank account rather than one with the company name. I know I need to act fast but don't know what to do next. £3k might seem a small amount of money, but as an OAP on state pension it's a lot to me. Any advice gratefully received.

NEW INFORMATION: Have just discovered salesman has been prosecuted and jailed several times for 'dodgy' car sales, and the garage providing the MOT may also be falsifying documents. Really don't know what to do now.

V5C is not proof of ownership. Make sure you keep the receipt safe, that is your proof of ownership.
You need to download V62 complete the form and post it to the stated address. You should receive a new V5c in the post.

You can check the car's current mot status online. Try googling " check my car's mot status". A paper copy is not a necessity these days

Thank you. It's turned out to be far worse than I thought, I'll update here soon.
