  • Road Tax Letters not received + Garage misleading

    Hello,

Any help on this would be appreciated.

I bought a car in December 2023. At the time i was told when buying the car that the garage was taking care of renewing the road tax (which they did) and changing all the details of ownership of the car.

It turns out they did not change any of the details and as a result i received no Road Tax renewal letters. This resulted in me not renewing Road Tax when it was due in December 2024. As a result my car was reported for being on the road without tax, and impounded yesterday with no knowledge to my self. when i found out my car had gone missing (i assumed stolen) i rang 999 and they told me my tax was out of date and that it had been impounded.

I immediately renewed the tax and am currently sending off forms to change all of the details on the car to myself. I am looking at £221 to recover the car from the garage + a penalty is currently being sent out as it was reported.

I phoned the garage in the morning and they told me to "come and collect it when ready and we will discuss the price". When i got to the garage i was told as it was 20 minutes over 24 hours the price would be £221 instead of £100.

    I have 2 questions:

    1. while i know it is my responsibility to ensure the car is taxed. Is there any liability that the garage who sold me the car takes, given i was told they would update all of the details and they did not.

    2. Is it not misleading by omission for the impound garage not to make me aware that if i did not get there by a certain time the cost would rise so much. I also phoned up the night before and they stated the price was £221 with no mention of £100 for within 24 hours.

Any responses would be much appreciated.

A1 The V5C updates the registered keeper's details. You should have received a vehicle road tax letter, V11, from the DVLC when the tax was due for renewal. There are also free online websites to check tax and mot status of a vehicle

A2 It would have been polite for the garage to inform you as the vehicle owner that the charge would increase significantly if it wasn't collected within 24 hours and provide the actual latest time. You should write a letter of complaint to the garage
