  • Points Query - Tot Up rules

    Hi,

I was driving my partner's car home this evening and was pulled over by a police officer for the back left brake light not working. Upon doing all of the regular checks the officer has to do, it came back that I wasn't insured to drive her vehicle (which is my fault for not reading the renewal documents properly, I accept that).

So the long and short of it is I now have a ticket, and I am waiting for something in the post advising the next steps. Any idea what I'm likely to face? I have 6 points on my licence which won't 'count' from November, but if I have another 6 to 'tot up' to 12, does that mean I will be banned until November?

In all fairness the officer understood my position and said it was something a lot of insurers were doing now, where people were insured before but aren't now.

And advice would be very gratefully received.

    Thanks.

I should think they will issue a fixed penalty of £300 +6 penalty points. You will have to surrender your licence, and it will be retained.
You will have to apply for its return in November. and you should not drive until you have it in our possession.

It could well affect future insurance premiums, as insurers regard it as a serious offence (as it cheats them out of their premiums!)

If you have your own car with a separate insurance have you checked if it allows you to drive other vehicles? just a thought
