  • Private car sale

    Hi everyone,
im currently feeling very stupid and annoyed with myself, having spoken to multiple friends they all have different opinions so thought I’d ask on here to get some impartial opinions, here gos,
I purchased a second hand vehicle (2018 Range Rover vogue with 50000 miles at £26500) via private sale on mon 9th drove home on the evening of the 9th but took it really steady as vehicle had next to no fuel and every petrol station on the 30 mile journey home was shut because of no fuel in our area, I then drove it about 10 miles over the next 2 days, first time on a clear road I accelerated to about 60 mph Then it came up engine fault and engine stopped resulting in me having to coast to the side of the road,
I tryed starting it once but wouldnt start so I called the AA they recovered the car for me and I decided to send to the garage who had carried out the previous 2 services for the old owner, garage has finally diagnosed the car today and he’s saying it needs a engine rebuild costing upwards of 10k spoke to previous owner and there saying caveat emptor, I’m really stuck and wondering if there is any thing I can do.
    many thanks in advance

A lot will depend on how the vehicle was described in the advert and if the seller was a private seller or a trader plenty of advice will come on here may take a while as iits the weekend

What did the advert say about the condition of the engine/vehicle? Unless what the advert said was untrue then you have practically no comeback against a private seller.

Importantly was the seller genuinely a private individual selling their own vehicle or are they really a trader in which case you do have more rights?
