  • Yellow tinted glasses for night driving

I responded to a discussion on Threads about glare from oncoming headlights at night. I said I use clip on yellow tinted glasses over my spectacles and that they seem to work well. Another person says they are "technically illegal" but has not clarified.

I cannot tell whether this person is from the UK. I am hoping one of our resident motoring law experts can comment.

Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

The answer lies somewhere in here: i) https://www.college-optometrists.org...ts-and-driving
ii) Highway code rule 94 "At night or in poor visibility, do not use tinted glasses, lenses or visors if they restrict your vision." (bit subjective!)

My understanding is that light transmission through lenses must be at least 75%

I used to love night driving, but now avoid as much as possible.
My main problem is I drive a low slung MGB so my eyes are on the same level as headlights on many modern cars.
I just focus just ahead of my light beam and to the left (and hope!)

Thanks. These yellow things do not restrict my vision, and I find they reduce glare.

I drive an 'ordinary' estate car. I have the same problem as you, with headlights on SUVs and vans being at my eye level or higher - dipped beams are not dipped enough. A good part of my drive home at night is along country roads.
