Small claims action over used car sale

Hi all, I recently sold my wife’s old car via eBay. Car has run absolutely fine for us, recent MOT, no known issues, 18 year old with 175,000 miles.

Test drive conducted, sale agreed for £950, bloke payed cash and drove 3 hours home with no issues. Next day I start getting messages, wipers stopped working, engines lost power. None of these issues were present when I had the car.

Two weeks later he has ‘inspected’ the car on a ramp and now complaining about oil leaks. He want the car refunded and will be getting independent inspections before proceeding with small claims.

Should I just buy the car back and be done with it? Or should I take my chances and waste my time in small claims? I read about scams where cars have there parts swapped out with faulty ones before returning them to the seller, how could I prove/disprove this argument in court?

The add was factual, the MOT was 2 months and 300 miles before the sale. No invoice was done at point of sale.

Provided you are not a used car dealer and did not misrepresent the car when you sold it, you should refuse the buyer's demand for a refund
In a private sate it is let the. buyer beware. Especially so with an older high mileage car such as yours. The buyer had the chance to arrange inspection of the car before agreeing to purchase it
If the buyer bothers to read articles on the internet about private vehicle sales, he will drop any thought about starting a court claim

I believe some people do this regularly. I once sold a car and a few days later had a similar message that there were problems. I refused a refund and basically said "see you in court". The buyer took it no further.
