  • Main/Named Driver

    Hi all,

My son (24) wants to buy a 2nd car & has asked ME to be the Main Driver and HIM as a Named Driver, to get his insurance cheaper. He already owns & insures a van himself. He passed his test December last year, so has no No Claims Discount at all.

I told him that I couldn't do that, as I would not be the main driver, but was happy to be a named driver and that the insurance would be invalid if anything happened & if he did anything stupid, it could affect my own insurance that I've had for 40+ years!

What can I tell him so it is "legal" to him and not just a Dad saying "No" and being the bad guy in all this?

    Thanks in advance.

Your son risks being treated as uninsured once the insurer realises that he has not been truthful. The consequences will be more expensive than doing it properly now.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read this: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

I would not do this - it could result in any claim not being paid and worse.

"Fronting", which your son is suggesting is fraud.
It is illegal and if discovered could land you both with a criminal record which will affect you both for years to come.

Tell him to have a read of this:

          https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/a-z-of-fraud/fronting

(Other articles from various sources, saying very much the same, are available).

Thank you all - I have printed that "fronting" article & will shove it in front of him saying "that's why I won't do it"
