Accidentally sold a clocked car

about 6 mths ago I sold our family car ( I am not a trader) for about £1800 to a small car trader. I advertised it at the mileage the speedo said at the time.
Today(6mths later) he just got back in touch saying he’s checked mots from 2016 and the mileage shows a difference of about 20,000 miles. This was before I owned the car.
He want me to take the car back....
i am completely innocent and don’t have the finances. I appreciate his side however a part of me thinks a trader should be checking this kind of thing before buying?!
anyhow what should I do/what are my rights?/ I bought it through a private sale myself- they seemed decent enough people at the time.....

Could be a case of MOT testers fat fingers, a mate of mine had 10000 miles put on his the same day once.....

OK similar situation

viewed a car and put down a holding deposit.

got home to do checks

DVLA MOT check showed failed 28/11 53000+ then passed following day 29/11 on 88000+!!!!

immediately scared off 'clocking' got onto the dealer who denied clocking took place and that fault is of the MOT centre human error?????? said no one can drive 30,000+miles over night????

found out the following

MOT checker can amend if error picked up within 7 days of MOT cert being done and correction will show on DVLA
if outside the 7 days but within the MOT period that the error took place
DVLA have to be notified by registered owner for the correction to take place. DVLA will need log book, MOT cert, service record etc showing milage as proof before they will amend.
however
if outside of the current MOT i.e 2 years later, my understanding is that it is too late do anything about.

Happy to be corrected if anyone has a different experience.

like you i was surprised that the trader didn't double check milage details themselves before purchase. Like most things it the minority that give a bad rep for the industry - but you just don't always know who the bad guys are.

Apparently clocking is more common with newer vehicles!

Check what the DVLA say about it, then you will know for sure.

looks like rules have been updated to include
MOT garage has 28 days to rectify
No restriction on getting corrections via DVLA after the 28 day MOT garage period as long as you can evidence against the error.
