  • VOSA Rules, CPC driver training

I work for a vehicle auction company. Part of my job is to drive (Only on the company's private land) driving cars, vans and trucks through during the auction. No driver CPC training is required to drive any vehicle on private land. I also do general site maintenance, de-logo and valet vehicles. If the drivers who hold HGV licenses and CPC's, employed solely to collect vehicles from vendors premises and deliver them to the auction site are really busy and it is urgent, occasionally I am asked by my boss to help out by leaving the site to collect a vehicle weighing between 3500kg and 7500kg for which I have the correct category on my driving license to drive such vehicles. (C1 D1 etc) The HGV drivers tell me I am breaking law as I am employed as a driver even though I only normally drive on site. They say I need a CPC if I am to go off site even occasionally to help out, and that my boss is making me break the law by asking me. I can't find any concrete answers anywhere on the VOSA site or on line. Can anyone help?

You don't need the full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence ( CPC ) qualification if you're using the vehicle for: ... driving within 62 miles (100 kilometres) of your base - but the vehicle can't be carrying passengers or goods, and driving a lorry, bus or coach can't be your main job.
