Not Registered at Address - Worried about Council Tax
Hello there, I'm not very clever when it comes to Council Tax so hoping somebody can offer some advice or point me in the right direction.
I've lived at a property for nearly 20 years, on and off. On a few occasions I've lived elsewhere but never anywhere longer than a year. The property is owned (paying a mortgage) by my friend who pays Council Tax normally.
I've never registered for voting and always classed myself as private tenant on any official forms I've needed to complete. I want to register myself at this address now officially but worried that my friend will get into trouble for not declaring me there previously, and if it would affect their Council Tax payments/liability in any way.
There has been no benefit abuse or fraudulent claims made over the years, and if I understand it correctly Council Tax is paid for the property not number of residents, so no money should be owed. But because I've not officially registered residence anywhere for over 14 years (and never at the address I live at with my friend), I also would like to know if I'm looking at consequences.
I've looked at other questions but haven't found any that has asked the same kind of question. Can anyone help?
