Smudge I would not give up on this, yes you should have notified them of any changes ie your son becoming 18.
You have not claimed any discount you were entitled to only claimed it in the wrong way.
I would write to your local MP see if he can help, the people in the 'back office' will go by the book and not by common sense or reason.
