  • Bury Council Tax Charging For Empty Property

Hi, I'm new so please bare with me! We recently bought a property that was empty for just over a month before we got tenants in. The council are trying to charge us for the month it was empty PLUS an additional 50% because the property had been empty for over 2 years before we bought it. Surely we can't be liable for the vacant period before we bought it can we?
The council give 100% discount for empty and unfurnished up to 1 month and then 25% discount for empty and unfurnished for up to 2 years. When I rang the council yesterday to query why we hadn't got a discount but had in fact been charged an additional premium they said it was because the property had been empty for over 2 years. Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Hi

Just send them proof of purchase date, with a letter stating that between the purchase date and date of first tenant, you was preparing the house to be ready to let. The CT charge thing is only meant for properties that are ready to let. but council do it rather than checking the records......

Do it by email, ask them to explain the charges in relation to documents you have now supplied.
crazy council ( as in local council,NELC ) as a member of the public, i don't get mad, i get even
