  • Informing the council about partner

    Hi all

Im after advice on what i should tell the council. I have been getting a single occupant discount as i was living on my own. My girlfriend moved in some time ago but has been unemployed. It never crossed my mind about the council tax and someone mentioned it to me which has now sent me into a bit of a panic. Obviously i dont want to get in to trouble so will be informing the council of my situation straight away, however, do i tell them she has just moved in or do i tell them how long she has been living here. Im worried they will back date it and i will get a huge bill? I know ignornance isnt an excuse but i honestly never even thought about it as its the first time ive lived on my own so have never had to deal with sort of thing before. Any advice would be greatly recieved

Hi and welcome, as you now know that you should have given the council your change of circumstances immediately it is up to you and your conscience as to what date you give them as to the change. You say your girlfriend is unemployed and if she is on benefits then the change may or may not make a lot of difference to what you pay. If they do want anything backdated am sure you could come to some agreement as to a payment plan that you can afford.
Here is a link to a benefit checker and it will give you an idea of how much council tax you will be expected to pay http://www.entitledto.co.uk/
