What determines council tax band?

Is it still 1991 valuation? In my street, all houses are in band D. While mine is a 2 bedroom most are 3 bedrooms. Cheers

It will be that valuation, the valuation can be challenged if there is a marked varience in a street between similar properties, as in one lot are Band B and others are D. Problem is that it could go either ay, and the lower banded properties end up in the higher band.

In Wales they revalued them as a pilot, and some properties jumped from Band A to C as they were drive by valuations. and were reduced back on appeal, as they confused Terraced pre-fab Lowton Cubitt houses without gardens or double glazing, with traditional semis with gardens and garages. Accidentally on purpose no doubt.

The council had to recalculate all the bills in the affected properties and refund the accumulated difference, as it took three years to sort. they refused to refund (unlawfully imho) where they had an LO for the incorrect amount though, they said they were entitled to it, the barstewards

I used the one of MSE but i was suprised that they will still be using 1991 valuation.

They have to use that one, as it is the only one there is, they did a pilot re valuation in Wales, and the fall out from that one meant they shelved the English re valuation indefinitely as they feared what would happen when the bills jumpeduop as they did in Wales

I rang the valuation office. They did confirm that it was based on 1991 but i need to look for a house of lower band around the area. Anyone handle things like this before?

When we realized my daughters 2 bed house was in the same band as 3 & 4 bed houses in the same street we just pointed up the discrepancies and her house was rebanded. She then got a refund of overpaid charges going back to when she bought the house three years previously.
