  • council tax European tour

i am moving into Europe for work and am currently behind with my council tax and can't afford to pay the bill that is outstanding bill (currently £800) what will happen. .. Will they chase me for the money into Europe or will I have the police waiting for me at Stansted on my return? i'm worried. but I won't be able to pay a penny until I finish this contract in Hungary/Romania so am asking this question. If anyone can help or knows whatwill happen through experience I'd really like to hear your take on my situation.

It will lead to a liability order and bailiffs fetching up at your last address in the fullness of time to harrass the new occupier for your debt, unless you try to make an arrangement with the council, but the LO is odds on. If you are gone long enough they may class you as a wilful evader. If they don't know where you are and you are out of the country, there is not a lot they can do I suspect, but other Beagles may well know more.

think your right, after reading so many bailiff threads on here its likely they will get a LO the bailiffs will get involved and the new occupier of the OPs address will be subjected to all the hassle that comes from Bailiffs calling .
Might it be just possible the OP can contact the council to make some arrangement to pay whilst they are working away the must be earning as they work if not there may be very demanding Bailiff company looking for them when they return and a very upset resident in the property in question.
Have a strong feeling the council will refuse a payment plan believing rightly or wrongly that once in place any agreement will be broken by the OP.
Interesting to see all the advice on this and the outcome

Thanx for your input people, I think I may have to contact the council and set up payment for them, however small-per week, as I don't wanna cause anyone any grief, and I don't want to be getting into trouble on my return. IF ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAS ANYTHING TO ADD, I'D BE MOST GRATEFUL.

make sure that your have told the council in writing (signed for ) the dates you are out of the country......... Pay them weekly on line and if possible arrange it so that the bill is cleared by the time you return .

Will you still be keeping your home here or giving it up?

Is it true that, like Albanian bailiffs, the bailiffs in Romania are allowed to harvest a person's organs in settlement of a debt?
