  • Changes to Council Tax from April

Dont know if this has been posted anywhere else, so here goes

Just received a leaflet from the council that details changes in the law from April

    1. From 1st April Council Tax Support will replace Council Tax Benefit

    2. All working age people will see their benefits restricted.

    3. They will have to pay at least 8.5% of their council tax bill

    4. Second adult rebates removed for working age claimants, except student households where no-one works

    5. Council tax can be paid over 12 months instead of 10

    6. Second homes discount of 10% removed, from 1/04/2013 they will receive a full bill

    7. Long term empty dwellings 10% discount removed, from 1/04/2013 they will receive a full bill

    8. Properties undergoing major structural repairs (class A exemption) are currently exempt for 12 months. From 1/04/2013 they will only receive a 20% discount.

9.Short term empty and unfurnished dwellings currently a 6 month exemption, reduced to 1 month exemption and 20% discount of full amount or 5 months.

    10. Housing - bedroom tax for working age people in social housing where property is under occupied

Wonder if the bedroom tax applies to claimants living in private rented accommodation ?

Jobseekers benefit is paid at the minimum rate the Government says it is needed to live on. Dont know how all this will pan out if jobseekers are now going to have to pay a minimum of 8.5% of their council tax bill out of their benefit

Hope you dont mind me replying as a newbee to the site.... In private housing there is a figure that the LA follow which is called the Local Housing Allowance together with the number of bedrooms the LA say you need... If for example you need a 3 bed house which has a LHA figure of £650 per month but the house you have is £700 then your choice is to try & find a cheaper house or pay the extra £50per month... Or LA say you need a 3 bed but for whatever reason you say I need a 4 bed & find one for £650 a month then the LHA will calculate the 4 bedroom cost of your house against the need for 3 & make you pay an amount towards your rent.... Hope I have made sense.

So in a way the Bedroom Tax is the way it has been for private renters (at least in my LA) for a while. I was on benefits for 4 years in a private rental.
