  • Overpaid council tax — refund?

    Hi.
In October 2021 I moved to a property with my now ex-partner. A month before that I started full time university course. We set up a council tax account together, and I didn’t apply for any student discounts because I wasn’t aware there were any. So I have been paying the full council tax since October 2021.
In January this year I broke up with him and he moved out. Again, I didn’t make any changes to my council tax account and I kept paying the full amount.
Today I learned that not only I would be eligible for a single person discount since January, but apparently I am fully exempt from paying council tax…
my question is: is there any way of receiving a refund for the overpaid tax?

Have you asked the Council? In my experience, if you are eligible for a refund you will receive it.
Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

Litigants in Person should download and read this: https://www.judiciary.uk/wp-content/..._in_Person.pdf

You are entitled to a student discount but if your partner was working that will change things. As above, contact the council.
