  • Council tax query

Hello, I hope you can help me.

I bought a flat and the date of entry has been set to 27 August. I’ve given my notice to my landlord but the contract required me to give them two months notice, so I’m now stuck with my rent contract finishing in October while I will live in my new house from the end of August.

I have a question about the Council Tax - what should I say to the council? I’m officially moving on 27 August but my rent contract will finish in October, do I need to pay the Council Tax for two different properties until October? If so, how do I notify the council? I tried to give them a bell but no one replied due to too many calls.

    I live in Scotland.

    Thanks.

You only need to pay council tax on one property provided you inform the council.

Most council offices are closed to the public except for emergencies and then only by appointment.

Many of their staff are working from home which means everything is taking longer than it did pre-covid.

If you persevere, they will deal with your enquiry eventually.
