  • Single Occupier

    Hi,

I moved into a flat on my own in 2014 and set up council tax with single occupier discount.
my wife moved in early 2018 and we moved out nov 2019 and I set up new CT for this house without single occupier discounts.
It dawned on me I’ve been claiming it over a year when I shouldn’t have. *She was a student for half that time. *I called the council and they just asked me to confirm via enquiry form.
i am more than happy to pay the bill for what I owed, I just didn’t naturally think “I need to update council”. *All the bills were in my name, the tenancy etc. *I just viewed it as “my flat”*
I am now worried the council will prosecute me and I will lose my job and get a conviction. *I don’t recall ever denying she lived there....the only forms I completed were for electoral roll, and she isn’t eligible to vote.
i hear it’s unlikely they will go to criminal proceedings. *The only thing I did wrong is they asked me if my old address was single occupied when I set up the new bill and I said “yes”. I didn’t really think of the implications when I spoke to them and as soon as it dawned on me what the situation was I got in touch to tell them. *My only worry is it was a LONG time I didn’t say anything. *I just pay the bill, and I kind of viewed it as “my place” - I paid all the bills, we didn’t share anything for the utilities etc. *
Anyone can allay my fears as I’m struggling to work with the worry. *I have a small baby and supporting a wife and a conviction would ruin all our lives. *
