  • Council Tax for full time student with adult children on Universal Credit

Could anyone shed any light on this?

I am a mature, full time student living with two adult children who are both receiving universal credit, neither is paying me any rent.
At the moment I am paying the full amount of council tax.

From my understanding, if I lived alone I would not have to pay any council tax, but since they count as adults there is a liability for council tax, which I am paying.

I have read about a second adult discount and that a person receiving universal credit can apply for council tax reduction but don't know which one of these to pursue. Should they both be applying for council tax reduction or should I apply for second adult discount and how much of a reduction can I expect?

    Thanks for any help.

Single occupancy is normally 25% discount. Why are children not paying rent/ keep?

When you say a full time student are you in higher education?

If so, you are correct, from the day the course starts until the official day the course ends or you leave there is no council tax due.

Why not not contact the council and ask about council tax relief for adult occupants who are in receipt of universal credit

Providing you meet the criteria to be regarded as a full time student then you are disregarded for the purposes of the council tax calculation but you remain liable for the council tax charge by virtue of having the highest legal interest as per s6 of the local government finance act 1992.

Your children cannot apply themselves for any assistance via council tax reduction as they don't have a council tax liability (that is in your name, even as a student). Your local council's council tax reduction scheme may allow for you to claim some reduction but you would need to speak to the council.
