My brother in law is selling his house, the solicitor has quoted him for straight forward conveyancing but because there are a few complicated issues that need sorting out he wishes to charge him an extra £250.00 an hour for any work involved, is that the average hourly rate for such issues?

is this plus VAT?
Before I ceased working as a corporate solicitor (not conveyancing), my hourly rate was £265 + VAT. £250 + VAT sounds like a fairly senior lawyer.
Can a fixed fee be agreed? On most of my work I agreed fixed fees for the job.Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

It is never too late to retrain, take all the exams, training contract, gain several years of experience etc.
I am sure that you realise that my earnings were rather less than the fees my firm charged for my time.Lawyer (solicitor) - retired from practice, now supervising solicitor in a university law clinic. I do not advise by private message.

have assisted with Court Marshalls clerical statements etc back in the 60s, for income of couple pounds a week. at 78 yrs retrain? probably advise in most areas from practical experiences, in the past legal procedure failed and cost monies,; hence those vulnerable get free assistance when the state fails to assist with fees. one thing people who come to these sites looking for help in dire straits at times and voluntary help offered if possible.
Many of us offer experience where we can but also try to get people to understand the law can be misinterpreted in different ways by some DJs etc (Known as Mis- directing themselves). Hence nothing is Black & white.
I see on here some helpers try to down other helpers which is dealt with on a persons thread (a no go = but a private message to those would be appropriate) people ask on here for advice / help not a discussion between helpers?
