  • SKY tv installation issue

    Hi all

I live in a rented property from a landlord who leaseholds it from a managing agent/landlord.

Today i was having SKY tv installed as a present from my parents for my birthday, i did not know anything of this until this morning when the SKY engineers turned up. As they got out of van one of the residents in the street approached them and told them that no dish could be put up on the front of the house.

The SKY engineers decided they needed longer ladders to set up dish at back of building so went off to get equipment, they turned up an hour later to install dish round back of property. As they were setting the ladders up another resident (rather angrily i am told) appeared and basically told them that we are not allowed SKY round here and told them to leave. The engineers calmed her down and told my girlfreind they were leaving due to the issue from neighbours.

This has upset me deeply as it is embarrasing that two neighbours have made a fuss in full view of everyone else about something which really has nothing to do with them and is of issue between me, my landlord and the managing agent/landlord. Im really annoyed at the way they have dealt with this without coming to discuss with me before approaching engineers.

Both residents are part of a Residency association that liaise with the managing agent on a quarterly basis which is used for comments on issues and problems that may arise in future.

My question is do these people actually have any right to basically tell people who i have paid to stop them from doing something i have paid for. My landlord has noi issue with it but is waiting to hear from the managing agent on this issue. I understand that ultimately the decision is down to the managing agent about me putting the dish up, but there are at least 7 other SKY dishs installed on the street so why am i not allowed to have one up.

It has spoilt my birthday really and i am quite annoyed at the whole situation as tv is one of the only enjoyments i have in life.

Thanks for your replys in advance

There may well be deeds of covenant applicable.
When I bought my own house and did my conveyancing, there was exactly such a covenant that had to be rescinded.
As a tenant, you can't just install aerials or dishes, you know.
I suggest you contact the landlord / managing agent to ascertain the position.
In some respects, you're fortunate that the people stopped the Sky installers. They could just have commenced an action against you.

With blocks that are managed by managing agents (who I act for regularly), there is typically a communal Sky dish - has this been checked?

The lease will contain a restrictive covenant which prevents the leaseholder (and by extension, you) from putting up a Sky dish. It's because it protects the overall appearance of the block.

The other leaseholders may well have written consent from the managing agent on behalf of the landlord or management company (whoever is the covenantee), so give them a call and ask what the process is.

A Deed of Covenant is a sale document and has no bearing in this situation.
