On this forum and in most personal correspondence I write in a conversational or prosaic format. Usually you could spend many hours picking the bad grammar, split infinitives and spelling errors out!:rolleyes2: In some cases it is better to deviate from the normal rules in order to achieve a friendlier and less intimidating tone. It is often a good idea to make a written piece sound more casual or conversational in order to mirror the style of the originator.
However, for official correspondence or when I am contracted to write a piece I do stick to the rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling. I believe that letter from an official organisation such as the council should be grammatically correct. Otherwise it just gives the impression that the office junior was given the task of ‘fobbing’ you off. It is a simple act of respect.

An optimist is someone who falls off the Empire State Building, and after 50 floors says, 'So far so good'!

I'm afraid that in an overwhelming number of cases the officer junior has been tasked to deal with correspondence that a senior member of staff is unsure what to do or is just to bloody lazy to do the job, unfortunately I see this almost daily even from those in the " legal" fraternity.
