  • Taking care of title deeds

Seeking advice. My elderly MIL's house is not registered, and she keeps her 58-year0old original title deeds in her desk. Is there a way of legal-copying these so that we have a backup if they are lost or stolen? Without having to go through the registration procedure, which I have heard is quite complex? (Particularly if not selling the house at the time.) Or any other way of making a legally valid backup copy or protecting them? Any advice appreciated.

They certainly need to be more secure - a small fireproof safe at the very least. The Land Registry would be pleased to advise on how to complete an initial registration.

Thank you. I didn't know there was such a thing as an initial registration. I have put an enquiry through to them.
