  • Building extension issues

Hello, I had a single storey extension about 2 years ago. Over the last months we have noticed lots of deep cracks forming on the walls. It also now looks like our kitchen worktops have separated from the splash backs. We also had an outdoor patio build and the tiles have started to dip and separate. We believe it may be an issue with the ground/structure/foundations. I had my builder come over to take a look and he suggested that I get the structural engineer over to have a look as he unsure what is causing all of these issues. I am just looking for an advice on best next steps please. I am happy to get the structural engineer over if that is what's best, but do I get the structural engineer company that did the work on my house, or do I get a different one in so they are more impartial?
    Appreciate any thoughts.

    Thanks

Was Council building inspector involved in the build if so there should be records of inspection of the foundations that May be the problem first stop before you get the expeence of experts

Yes we had a building inspector who came over throughout the build process and signed it off when completed. I did message him and he also said to get a structural engineer over

        Get that structural engineer's report.

Thanks atticus - should I get the company that did the structural engineering drawings for us? Or should I get a different company? My wife is worried that if we get the report from the company that we used for the work, that they may not be impartial.

If you want a good objective view then you should engage someone independent, with no previous involvement. It is possible that the problem is with the design and not how it was implemented.
