  • EPC and extremely cold flat

I rented a flat privately. I paid a year upfront, I was stupid, I felt pressured as I was told others wanted the property, and I would have had nowhere to live. I requested the EPC on 10th Oct. I did not receive it until after I’d paid. I got it the day I was meant to move in, 21 days after I requested it.

An EPC was done in March 2020 and it scored an F, it was redone in August 2023 and scored E. Had I seen the EPC report, I would not have rented the property.

I have put the heating on and tried plug in heaters, but unless I’m sat next to the plug in heater I’m freezing. The plug in heater does not make me feel warm, I just feel less cold. But my hands still turn blue and red and are painful. I have asthma, but had rarely used my inhaler. However, after a very cold night in the flat, I have been relying on it. I ended up sleeping on a sofa of a relative and thankfully after a week of warmth I feel better. I have crohns, I have bipolar, I have arthritis related to my crohns and raynauds. The flat is impossible to heat. The weather is only going to get colder. I can’t live there. I don’t know what to do. I know I was stupid to pay a year upfront with no break clause. I was desperate and trying to avoid having nowhere to live.

I’m also receiving post for the landlord and it’s a CCJ. Although I know I’m this does not count against me, due to my job having it seem as though someone with a CCJ live with me could be detrimental to my employment. I also worry that I may be visited by people due to the CCJ. I don’t want someone trying to knock the door down to find a landlord that doesn’t live there.
